A few years ago, some of the top minds at Blizzard jumped ship to start their own company: Flagship Studios. For a long time, the budding developer's project was veiled in secrecy, and all prospective fans could do was speculate as to the nature of its workings. Speculation came to a halt in 2004, when Hellgate: London was formally announced. Admittedly, no one was really surprised that Flagship's premier title was going to be an action-RPG. Then again, even fewer were upset by the fact that Bill Roper and company were involved in an ambitious retread of the sort of game that earned them their distinguished status.
Hellgate is very much a spiritual successor to Diablo, despite the fact that it is thematically removed from the series by a few degrees. Yes, demons are invading the human world, but mankind's base of operations isn't a sleepy village on the edge of darkness' domain; it's actually an abandoned subway station in the heart of it. The setting is modern day, and the scene is London. Players get to pick from three classes (or "factions," reflecting their in-game affiliations): the hard-hitting, crusading Templars (named after the ancient order of Knights Templar, popularized by such works of fiction as The Da Vinci Code and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade); the magic-wielding Cabalists (which seem to take a cue from the Spiritualism movement of the 19th and early 20th centuries); and the gun-toting Hunters (think Rainbow Six meets Men in Black).
